Conceived as an entirely new product line for Ford Motor Company, the Edsel was introduced in 1957 as a 1958 model. Ford intended to have the Edsel fill a niche that was being filled by companies such as Buick, Oldsmobile and to some extent Chrysler, with their New Yorker models. Edsel was produced for just three years and the experiment ended when projected sales never materialized.
